ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we define semantic priming and describe how semantic priming methods have been used in L1, bilingual and L2 processing and acquisition research. We present the three experimental tasks used in semantic priming research and describe in detail the materials, procedure and analysis of each task. We highlight an example study that used semantic priming to investigate L2 acquisition, and we outline several methodological issues to consider when designing semantic priming studies. We conclude the chapter with suggestions for additional uses of semantic priming tasks in L2 research.
