As best can be ascertained, the poet John Masefi eld did not study at the London School of Economics. Yet his elegant word picture of ancient Assyria is one not well-known to most. Assyria the Warrior is a fi gure well-researched; Assyria the innovative Merchant Prince is the theme of this chapter.
