ABSTRACT
MEDICALISATION MEANS THE INTRUSION into everyday life ofmedical interventions. Sociologists frequently invoke the stance of Ivan Illich (1975) who, in his polemic against the profession of medicine (and all other professions), considers that there has been considerable over-stimulation of ‘wants’ by people in Western countries.
