through the mire of their own making. Those who have tried to tidy up (the Romans, Crusaders, Mongols, Islamists, Nazis, neoconservatives) have generally caused more mess in their attempts or wake than was there in the first place. However, human societies and the physical environment have adapted and persisted. But muddling through the present mess could be impossible. We may well be doomed, and it might be time to panic.
