ABSTRACT

Two projects inform this book: the Literacies for Learning in Further Education (hereafter LfLFE) and the Bilingual Literacies for Learning (hereafter BiLfLFE) research projects. The projects were funded in the period January 2004 to August 2007 as part of Phase 3 of the United Kingdom’s Teaching and Learning Research Programme (TLRP). These projects constitute the first major study of literacy practices in colleges in England, Scotland and Wales, exploring, in particular, the literacy practices associated with learning different subjects, the literacy practices in which students engage in their day-to-day lives outside of college, and the possible teaching and learning strategies through which the latter can help to support the former.
