ABSTRACT

Successfully socializing patients to the nature of therapy and the theoretical model used is crucial for effective and ef®cient treatment. Whatever the treatment approach, poor socialization often leads to problems in therapy because the patient is unaware of the aims of therapy and does not have a shared understanding with the therapist. MCT differs from other CBT approaches in that, regardless of the disorder being treated, the patient is socialized to the role that the cognitive attentional syndrome (see Point 3) and metacognitive beliefs play in problem maintenance.
