ABSTRACT

MCT aims to promote ``detached mindfulness'' (DM; Wells & Matthews, 1994), which counteracts the cognitive attentional syndrome. Detached mindfulness refers to how individuals respond to mental events (e.g. worries, intrusive images, negative thoughts, and memories). As described in Point 7, detached mindfulness involves discontinuation of any further cognitive or coping response to thoughts, which typically involves the suspension of perseverative thinking and speci®c coping strategies such as focusing, avoidance or transforming thoughts. The second feature of detachment consists of an individual directly experiencing self as an observer separate from the occurrence of the thought itself.
