As we shall see, colonial CD laws differed radically from their British counterparts but these differences, I would argue, were fundamental to the shape and practice of the British laws, suggesting that distinction need not mean separation but might rather suggest symbiosis. In highlighting the relationship between politics and law, morals, medicine, and the military, the comparisons central to this study also demonstrate the state's need to assert and maintain control over sexuality in order to assure its rule.
