The lessons for practice in writing kana (and, later, kanji) in the Writing Practice Book show model characters with numbers indicating the order in which the strokes should be written. Stroke order is not random and it is advisable to learn this correct stroke order, which makes it easier to shape characters skillfully. The sequence of strokes follow certain general principles:
