ABSTRACT

Finally, no discussion of the therapeutic process would be complete without a discussion of termination. In postmodern perspectives such as narrative therapy, termination is a mutually decided upon process that is viewed as a graduation or a rite of passage (Epston & White, 1995) to a preferred identity, a transition that is in itself therapeutic. Consolidating gains made over the course of therapy can be accomplished through the use of a variety of questions, such as the following:

· If you were to write a manual for how to overcome the problem you've just conquered, what sort of ideas would it include? What personal and relationship qualities allowed you to identify this know-how and put it to use? How could you keep this knowledge alive in your own life in the future?
