ABSTRACT
Before media transmitted action electronically, all entertainment was performed live. Today, the performing arts must struggle to maintain a slice of the entertainment pie. Founded on ancient traditions that established the basis for dramatic theory, the performing arts are important because they directly reflect our Western heritage. Although many different arts are classified under the rubric of performance, we will discuss those that are most important to twenty-first-century leisure.
