Dictionaries and frequency dictionaries The word “dictionary” usually brings to mind a large
book with definitions or second language glosses.
This book is precisely what the title promises: a
dictionary of German word frequencies. The 4037
entries represent the most commonly occurring
words in a four million word corpus of German and
are listed according to the frequency of their
occurrence. Listed with each entry is information
about the part of speech, an English translation, and a
brief example of how the word is used. Some words,
especially among the highest frequencies, have more
than one meaning and in some cases can belong to
more than one part of speech.
