ABSTRACT

For most people in the U.S., arithmetic is arguably the most salient topic in elementary mathematics education. However, most people would also argue that this would be an inappropriate topic in preprimary education. We begin our discussion considering research on the age at which knowledge of and skills in arithmetic appear to emerge.
