ABSTRACT
The Olympics are the foremost of the genre commonly described as sporting mega-events. Cities vigorously compete to host sporting mega-events for many reasons, not least of which is the belief that, in doing so, images will be enhanced and economies will be stimulated. The hosting of international sporting events requires considerable expenditure on infrastructure, and their organisation and security critically depend upon public subsidies.
