ABSTRACT

One of the very interesting but demanding sides of a Colonial Officer’s duties was going on tour. Although far from routine because you could never be sure how it would turn out or what you would encounter, the tour, by the time I joined the service, had become an established tradition with set forms and structures. We would try to cover two-thirds to threequarters of the District by touring in any given year. During 20 months in Mwinilunga, I toured six chiefs’ areas, spending nearly five months in total away from the office and cycling as far as on the Tour de France.
