I left Northern Rhodesia in 1961. Since then, it has gained Independence and, in the process, changed its name to Zambia. As time went by, my adventures there gradually took on a dream-like, unreal quality, so unrelated were they to my new life back in Scotland and later in Canada. But I never forgot. I continued to read avidly the few books and articles on Zambia that I found and to follow the fortunes of Zambia’s football team in World Cup and Africa Cup competitions. The idea of returning there, however, did not occur to me until almost the fiftieth anniversary of my arrival as a young, very ‘green’ Cadet District Officer.
