ABSTRACT
There has been a signifi cant growth of coaching related courses in a range of institutions in the UK during recent years, and at the same time a signifi cant growth in coaching opportunities and employment, with more and more sports clubs, schools and organizations now requiring the services of a coach. Coaching will take on more signifi cance with the 2012 London Olympics not far away and the need for coaches to support the athletes in their quest for gold. Moreover, SportsCoachUK are striving to professionalize coaching, and are implementing the UK Coaching Framework, which has a “vision of a cohesive, ethical, inclusive and valued coaching system where: skilled coaches support children, players and athletes at all stages of their development in sport, and which is number one in the world by 2016” (SportsCoachUK, 2007, p. 2).
