ABSTRACT

Coaching can be traced as far back as Ancient Greece, when wrestlers were instructed in the art of wrestling along with many other disciplines, which are similar to events in today’s modern Olympiads. Between the fourth and fi fth century BC the Greek athletes’ training and preparation was a direct result of the physical education system and the special preparation for Olympic competition (Mechikoff and Estes, 1998). In Roman times ex-gladiators acted as instructors (doctores) and provided training in the fi ghting techniques and weapons of specifi c gladiator roles (Watkins, 1997).
