ABSTRACT

Along with the many other roles that the coach fulfi ls, management and organization are key aspects of being an effective coach. Before management and organizational functions can be identifi ed and applied to the coaching context, a basic understanding of the theoretical principles that underpin management practice is essential. Modern management principles emerged in the twentieth century, with different perspectives being offered to underpin and explain the management processes. Theories such as classical management emerged along with bureaucratic, scientifi c and administrative management perspectives, all of which focused on organizational effi ciency (Barnett, 2009) and these persisted into the early 1900s (Torkildsen, 2005).
