ABSTRACT

This chapter is designed to offer those new to complexity science or the science of complex systems, as it is sometimes known, an understanding of the basic scientific tenets. It also includes chaos theory, which was a forerunner of complexity science and which is an integral component of complexity science. The descriptions and definitions are not given in scientific terms and I have omitted equations and formulae. These explanations are not exhaustive, nor are they meant to be, as their purpose is not a scientific one. They are provided on the basis that without an all-round and proper understanding of the scientific background, it is not possible to properly consider the application of complexity science in organizational and management contexts.
