ABSTRACT
Jane Campion is one of the world’s most recognised and celebrated filmmakers, the winner of innumerable awards and critical acclaim. That Campion has arrived at these accomplishments with only a handful of feature films to her name makes them seem all the more remarkable. She was the first woman (and not incidentally the first New Zealander) to earn a coveted Palm d’Or at the Cannes film festival, doing it with just her fourth feature film, The Piano (1993), previously having won the festival’s equivalent short film award with her student film Peel (1982).2 By any standards she is the most successful woman working in the contemporary film industry.
