ABSTRACT
Baseball is the American sport, constructed as the national pastime, played by numerous American boys, but also big business and a media attraction watched by millions. Baseball became a professional sport in the nineteenth century and influenced the professionalization processes of American sport decisively. The game is at the center of the American culture and provided the blueprint and business model for the other professional sports.
