Although that lip-lock was a mere five seconds long, it generated dozens of articles in the country’s most influential newspapers. The Washington Post ran eight stories about it, and the Los Angeles Times ran eleven. What’s more, the “lesbian kiss,” as the entire country was soon calling it, succeeded in causing more TV viewers to tune into the ABC sitcom Roseanne that week than to any other show.
