ABSTRACT

In the reign of Claudius, Vespasian was sent to Germany as a legionary Legate through the influence of Narcissus. From there he was transferred to Britain and fought the enemy on thirty occasions. He reduced to submission two powerful tribes, more than twenty towns, and the Island of Vectis (Wight) which is very close to Britain, this partly under the command of Aulus Plautius, the Consular Governor, and partly under the command of Claudius himself. For this he received triumphal insignia and shortly afterwards two priesthoods in addition to the consulship, which he held for the last two months of the year (AD 51).
