ABSTRACT
What explains the consolidation of democracy in some countries and the lack thereof in others? In the introduction to this book, four shortcomings in the present CoD literature were identifi ed that present hurdles one needs to overcome in order to answer this question. These problems referred to the conceptual meaning of CoD, its measurement, causal theories, and the methodological constraints when investigating causally complex claims.
