ABSTRACT

Having outlined the architectural influences from ancient civilisations to Byzantine architecture we can now turn to the styles of the United Kingdom. While it is tempting to categorise periods of architectural development by date, these should only be used as an indication of styles and not be used prescriptively. Architectural development should be regarded as a continuum and the dated periods given are therefore only indicative of generic dates when styles were fashionable, developing or in decline. Dates of various periods of architectural influence will also vary across the different geographical and cultural areas of Europe.
