ABSTRACT

This book is part of a series of volumes which are investigating the art and science of architecture in its widest sense. This volume is concerned with three main subjects: architectural history, materials technology and building conservation. These three elements are closely intertwined and while each may stand on their own, it is only from an understanding of all three that it is possible to be in a position to act as a conservation practitioner. Understanding of how buildings were designed, what inspired their styles and the materials they were created from all form the foundation for protecting those buildings. This clarity of understanding then allows informed decisions to be made about the future of the historic environment.
