ABSTRACT

From around ad 600 to ad 1400 Italy was dominated by Romanesque architecture. This was a style developed into the thirteenth century as exemplified by the complex of buildings at Pisa in northern Italy. These include the cathedral at Pisa, dating to the late eleventh century, the Baptistry built 1153–1278 and the famous Campanile bell tower or Leaning Tower built 1174. The Baptistry was designed by Dioti Salui and is on a circular plan and although there are later fourteenth-century Gothic additions, it is still Romanesque in design (Fletcher, 1928).
