ABSTRACT

This part has set out the main building materials to be found within the historic buildings of the United Kingdom. As with architectural styles, materials have altered and adapted over time as manufacturing methods and sources of materials have changed. Some materials have been highly fashionable but short-lived, such as Vitrolite, but others have an enduring and long-lasting place in construction, such as brick. However, all of these must be fully understood prior to any intervention work being undertaken. Some will require specialist knowledge due to their particular composition and it is always advisable to investigate this fully to ensure that the correct approach to repairs is undertaken.
