ABSTRACT
The origins of the modern conservation movement are in the “anti-scrape” movement of the late nineteenth century. The principles of conservative repair were established by William Morris and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Monuments (SPAB) but the philosophical debate had its origins earlier in the nineteenth century.
