ABSTRACT

In addition to legislation and guidance, there are a number of groups who provide an invaluable service in protecting the historic environment. These groups are varied in their focus but they perform vital functions in a number of areas. First, they raise awareness about the importance of particular buildings. Second, some groups offer training and advice about particular aspects of historic buildings. Third, they may be involved in campaigns to save threatened buildings which they consider to be of importance. Finally, certain groups may be better able to access funds in order to carry out conservation work.
