ABSTRACT
Current legislation and accepted conservation doctrines have their origins in the philosophical debates of the nineteenth century. William Morris and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings took the debate forward by establishing a set of principles which still applies over 100 years later. These principles have been given international recognition through the adoption of various charters such as the Venice and Burra Charters.
