ABSTRACT
History is a continuum. It is affected by many closely inter-related factors, philosophical, physical and spiritual. It offers a palimpsest (a manuscript which is written and then written over) which needs to be understood, maintained, conserved and protected. There should therefore not be any interventions to a historic building without first establishing if our comprehension of the building and its development is accurate.
