ABSTRACT

There are family members the people try to forget and ones that they always remember, that they can’t stop talking about. More than any other family members, together they gave the author a worldview that sustained during a difficult and painful childhood. In a big two-story wood frame house with lots of rooms they constructed a world that could contain their separate and distinct personalities. There were treasures everywhere in that small room. There was no violence in Daddy Gus. Mama shared that he had always been that way, a calm and gentle man, full of tenderness. In the back of their house were fruit trees, chicken coops, and gardens, and in the front were flowers. The quilt that covered the author as a child remains, full of ink stains and faded colors.
