ABSTRACT

This book has now interwoven three stories of transformation. The first is a personal one in which a wonder at the potential of the field of organization is transformed into a career-long pursuit to unravel its secrets. The second is the story of the transformation of the field of organization itself, from a concern with design of structures for efficiency to a more organic concern with the organization of the conditions that make life rewarding and meaningful. The third and unanticipated story to emerge through the process of writing itself is our story, the story of the human spirit struggling to make the best of the conditions we find ourselves in. It is the story about how ultimately we find ways to transcend theory and practice to transform our world. This chapter reflects on the key points of insight and experience that contributed to these three joint transformations.
