ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the evolution of some Anglo-American economies in the last 400 years. An obvious source of data is the UK which seems to have been the first nation in Europe to engage in the economic change associated with the emerging Industrial Revolution. The UK was also the colonial power in control of Canada, the US, Australia and New Zealand for much of the eighteenth century. By the late nineteenth century the UK was an industrial competitor of Germany, the US and, to a lesser extent, France.
