ABSTRACT

Saying what you would do if... - the conditional The conditional is formed very simply – take the 3rd person singular / plural past-tense forms of the verb (let's take kupić 'buy' as an example) and add the endings below:

neut

kupiło -by Plural men / mixed groups other nouns kupili -byśmy kupiły -byśmy kupili -byście kupiły -byście kupili -by kupiły -by

The stress remains on the same syllable as before the endings were added: kupiłbym, kupiłabym. The conditional endings can be attached to the verb or, as you have seen, they can precede it. Where gdyby 'if is used, the conditional ending is always attached to it.
