Weightrestorationisfundamentaltorecoveryfromanorexianervosa.It correctstheprofoundphysicalandmentalconsequencesofthedisorder. Weightrestorationmustoccurbeforemostpatientsareabletobenefit fromthepsychologicalaspectsoftreatment(Garneretal.,1982,p.26; Touyz&Beumont,1997,p.361).Althoughweightrestorationusually precedesnormalizedfoodbehaviors,subsequentlypatientsareabletoeat awidervarietyoffoodsandexhibitlessobsessivefood-relatedthoughts andbehaviors(AmericanPsychiatricAssociation,2000,p.31).Furthermore,weightrestorationrequirespatientstoaddresstheirfearofweight gain.
