ABSTRACT

The metaphor scripts presented in the present chapter were constructed for use with depressed, self-effacing, self-blaming clients whose underlying pain stems from critical self-evaluations and pessimistic attitudes coupled with recurring memories of past failures, rejections, or disappointments. These scripts emphasize the well-established correlation between such patterns of thought and subsequent painful feelings of depression, helplessness, or worthlessness. They also stress the realization that it is up to the client to replace these painful, self-destructive thoughts with internal and external sources of pleasure and satisfaction.
