ABSTRACT

Aerobic performance is dependent on the effective functioning of the oxygen transport system. The lungs, the heart, the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, and the capability of the active tissues to utilise the oxygen supplied to them are all implicated. Aerobic performance therefore has both central and peripheral aspects, reliant on cardiac output and circulation of the blood on the one hand and on the other the ability of skeletal muscle to take up and consume the oxygen that is offered.
