Th e Activity Focus: Ms. Collins introduces students to the concept of volume of a rectangular prism and why multiplication is used in the formula for fi nding its volume.

As the class began, Ms. Collins had a set of 20 1-inch cubes on the front table. When she fl ipped the objective sheet, she had Maxine read it: “How many apartments are in the apartment house?” she said. Ms. Collins then told the class that today they were going to look at simple structures and investigate the mathematics in the construction.
