ABSTRACT

The fields of modern operations management and project management both grew out of Operations Research at that time. People were aiming to improve performance of production, logistics and projects, and many of the optimization tools of Operations Research were found to be very useful for that. Both of the modern fields of operations management and project management have continued to develop their mathematical and systems side to improve decision making in operations, supply chain and project management. But as we shall see in the remainder of this book, whereas the field of operations management has not advanced much beyond the application of optimization algorithms to production and logistics processes (Slack et al., 2006), project management has widened considerably, often adopting ideas from other fields of management (Kwak and Anbari, 2008).
