ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses specifically on the history and politics of sex and gender ambiguity and difference at the Gay Games, particularly in relation to transgender participation in the sport programme. The central societal role and conservative nature of mainstream sport in naturalising the binary oppositions of male and female, heterosexuality and homosexuality, and valorising the former, stand as the backdrop to this history. This chapter examines the main issues and challenges of sex and gender differences for the philosophy, sports and cultural programmes of the Games and the significance of this diversity for the larger society and mainstream sports world.
