ABSTRACT

Major league baseball manager, Joe Torre, likes to remind reporters after a bad loss that every baseball team plays 162 games a year and no one game is crucial. The regular season is a “marathon, not a sprint” (https://www. cigaraficionado.com, accessed April 15, 2007). Torre planned for the post-season playoffs at the same time that he tried to win games on a daily basis. One major concern was getting players with nagging injuries enough rest so they could perform at the highest level when the playoffs began.
