ABSTRACT

As has been noted in Chapter 1, the definitions of construction, and so what activities are measured and recorded as constituting construction, do vary from country to country and change (slightly) over time. However, the variabilities are a result of history – in particular, the resources of the country and how organized exploitation of those resources has evolved which appear to give rise to ‘quirks of classification’. What is noteworthy is that the differences are marginal ones; there is general agreement concerning what are the main activities of the construction industry.
