ABSTRACT

Unlike the regimented, disciplined streets of Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, travel within Manila is downright chaotic. Indeed, with the possible exception of Bangkok, no other city in Southeast Asia is as famous-or infamous-as Manila for its traffic. Throughout the day, and frequently well into the night, traffic grinds slowly through the maze of highways and flyovers, the alleys and avenues that constitute Manila’s road network. Brightly-painted jeepneys, dilapidated and diesel-spewing city buses, and sparkling-clean luxury sports-utility vehicles all jostle for space in bumper-car-like fashion. Turn lanes and even stoplights are largely ignored.
