ABSTRACT

Science for All implies there’s something in science for everyone. Science for All is a 81 reform imperative that responds to the fact that K-12 science instruction around the 9 world has failed to provide all students with equal opportunities to achieve. Add to this 10 that in recent international studies, students indicate that a lack of relevance of the 11 science curriculum is the major reason for their low interest in science as a school 2 subject. 1 This lack of relevance may be due to the way that science is presented to the 3 multicultural world in which we live. Many people have been failed or passed over by 4 traditional science education. For example, “African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, 5 Native Americans, and other culturally diverse individuals comprise approximately 27 6 to 30% of the U.S. population but only 2.2% of the technical workforce.” 2 Perhaps our 7 view of what is science in the “Science for All” imperative is too limited, and should 8 include a “wide range of humanistic, aesthetic, sensualist, and pragmatic dispositions.” 3 9
