ABSTRACT

The future of helping involves a philosophical shift regarding the helping professional and how that professional delivers service. The philosophical shift involves utilizing the helpees as resources to help others. Carkhuff believes that the future of helping is interdependently related to the future of science: “helpers are the top of the future as ‘scientist-artists’ who process interdependently with their helpee populations; helpees will become invaluable resources who are introduced to infinite possibilities”. The concepts of peer training, deliberate psychological education (DPE), and other affective education concepts are relatively new to the field of education and, generally, have not been emphasized in counselor education until very recently. Some school systems employ prevention specialists and wellness coordinators to focus on strategies to prevent problems from developing and to reduce some at-risk behavior. Traditional religious responsibilities of the clergy have remained constant or have increased, and additional new demands for counseling help often have been added.
