ABSTRACT

The Symbolic component is the opposite of the Cognitive component on the Cognitive/Symbolic level of the Expressive Therapies Continuum. Whereas the Cognitive component emphasizes facts and logical thought, the Symbolic component is concerned with intuition and idiosyncratic or mythic thought. As was mentioned in the first chapter, the two poles of each bipolar level of the ETC have a curvilinear relationship. Therefore, as cognitive information processing increases, symbolic functioning is at first enhanced and bolstered by cognitive input; a modicum of rational thought is required to understand the mystical. Intuitive problem solving, self-discovery, and self-acceptance characterize the creative transition level, where optimal levels of each component influence creative activity. However, when cognitive thought becomes dominant, symbolic information processing diminishes and ultimately is blocked. The logical, linear decision-making and problem-solving characteristics associated with the Cognitive component of the ETC are opposite of the holistic, numinous qualities of the Symbolic component.
