ABSTRACT

Introduction Of the very serious and complex eating disorder symptoms, body image disturbance is one of the most challenging to treat and is known for being the last thing to remit in recovery. Given that body image disturbance significantly contributes to relapse, careful exploration and understanding of body image is critical to successful treatment. Clinicians working in this area need to have a grasp of this topic, not only from the perspective of their clients but also from their own. While the clinical literature validates that transference and countertransference issues are particularly powerful in the treatment of eating disorders, it generally neglects exploration of these issues specific to body image.
